Can I do the P90X Workout in a Hotel Room?

When you travel a lot, it can be difficult to get a workout in. Many hotels have what they refer to as their fitness center, which usually consists of a treadmill and eliptical machine. You know those rooms where there is an entire wall of glass to make the tiny room look bigger than it is. You’ve seen them before. Every once in a while you’ll get one with a universal weight machine or a bench and some free weights. Those are nice, but if there is one other person there lifting weights it makes it difficult to complete your workout.

Also, you may already be on a plan like P90X, Turbo Fire, or Insanity. You want to stay on your workout schedule because you know that if you skip a couple of days that it will be difficult to pick back up again when you return home. Well I’m here to tell you that you can do your workout in a hotel room with a few modifications and a couple of pieces of equipment. With a little creativity and planning you should be able to get just as good of a workout in on the road as you can at home. I’m going to use P90X as an example workout, but you can apply the information to just about any Beachbody program.

Here’s your checklist:

  • Laptop computer or portable DVD player
  • Beachbody Program DVDs
  • Resistance bands (one heavy and one light)
  • Door attachment for your bands

That’s about it. You can play the DVDs on your laptop. Any workoutst that require weights can use bands. You may just need to adjust the amount of reps that you do to make sure you are feeling it. For pull-ups you would just run a band through the door attachment and connect to the bathroom door. One nice perk of the P90X2 program is the hotel room variations. Every workout is set up so you can do it on the road using the equipment listed above and furniture you’ll find in any hotel room.

There’s also a great app for your iPhone, iPad, or iPod Touch where you can take Tony Horton and the P90X workouts wherever you go. With the P90X app you can:

Auto-schedule your workouts

Record your sets, reps, and weights for each workout

Push through plateaus with customized progress reports at day 30, 60, and 90

Automatically sync your workout data with the SuperGym®

Log your nutrition and calorie intake

Stay motivated by earning badges for meeting goals

Share your success and help motivate others!

The Shakeology Cleanse

I recently did something called the Shakeology Cleanse. If you’ve seen a documentary called Fat, Sick & Nearly Dead you know about juice fasting. I liked the concept and the results that people were getting and thought this sounded similar to the Shakeology Cleanse that I had heard some of the other Beachbody Coaches talking about. One of the things that Shakeology boasts is that it is whole food based with prebiotics, digestive enzumes, and phytonutrients. This is similar to the kinds of advantages that the juice fast offers.

News flash – Fruits and vegetables are good for you. If you want more information about the juice fasts used in the movie, go to www.jointhereboot.com for that. I would also highly recommend the documentary. It sheds a light on some of the very poor eating habits we have in our country, which are spreading around the world. If you subscribe to Netflix it is currently available to watch instantly.

So here are the details on the Shakeology Cleanse. Some people have also referred to it as the “Shakeology fast”. Fasting is abstaining from food, or some type of food for a period of time. The goal of the Shakeology Cleanse is to flush out a lot of the garbage in our system. The Cleanse lasts three days, which is much shorter than other fasts. For those three days you drink three servings of Shakeology per day, about 3-4 hours apart. Then for dinner, you have a salad with four ounces of lean protein. You can also have fruits or vegetables for a snack during the day. That’s it.

You should mix your shakes with water instead of juice or milk for the three days. The shakes on their own are only about 150 – 170 calories so you will likely be greatly reducing your calorie intake during this time. Each shake is Shakeology contains 70 ingredients which include essential vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants so you’re still getting plenty of nutrients and likely more than you would get in a normal day. The nice thing for me about Shakeology is that when I take it, I feel satisfied. Often when I eat other foods I feel the need to eat beyond my actual hunger. When I have a shake I don’t get that feeling so it’s really not that difficult to get through the three days.

I’ve found that after finishing the Shakeology Cleanse you will likely have more desire to eat fruits and vegetables and not all the other junk your body normally craves. Then you would just continue to subsitute one meal a day with Shakeology until you feel like you need to do the Cleanse again.

How did I get here?

Running as a family at the trackAs I approach the USA Track and Field Indoor Masters National Championships in a couple of weeks, I thought it would be nice to revisit the journey that brought me to where I am today.

Here’s an excerpt of my story as published on Pledgetostayfit.com back in January:

“I was involved in Track & Field in high school and college. During my senior year of college, I was involved in a car accident on my way to class one day. Another driver ran a stop sign and hit my car directly on the driver’s side at a high rate of speed. The impact left me in the hospital for a week with a fractured spleen and unable to finish my last outdoor season. At the time of my accident I weighed 155 lbs. Over the next few years I consistently put on more and more weight until I decided I needed to do something about it. I had gone up over 200 lbs. and was looking at upgrading my wardrobe yet again to accommodate another new pant size.
I started participating in open Track & Field meets as a way to motivate myself to stay in shape. In my first meet I ran the 200 meters and fell down about 30 yards from the finish line. Not a good start, but I didn’t give up and continued to run one meet a year for the next few years. One day while practicing on the track I felt a pop in my hamstring. It ended up being a pretty moderate hamstring strain and took a little over a month to come back from. One thing about hamstring injuries is that they are difficult to shake. I continued to have the same injury year-after-year until I saw some research on hamstring injuries and the impact of improving balance and core strength to reduce the likelihood of injury. I viewed a presentation that showed the rehabilitation and off-season exercises that major universities were using for their football and track athletes to prevent these injuries. One night, while watching the P90X infomercial, I realized that P90X incorporated many of these same moves into its program. I ordered the program in February of 2010 and haven’t looked back.

This past track season I decided to use Insanity: The Asylum during the season to stay in shape and reduce the amount of time I would spend training on the track. My conditioning had improved so much after using the program that I decided to go to Cleveland, Ohio to run in the USA Track & Field National Masters Championships. I felt like I was in great shape and if I continued the Asylum program I would only get better. Due to a condition in my calves that limits my ability to train regularly on the track, I took an unusual approach and used Asylum as my primary training program and only incorporated one or two workouts on the track each week. It proved to be successful as I achieved my goal of winning a medal by placing third in the 400 meter dash at the National Championships in my age group.”

Here’s a video I put together that shows me going through this journey.

Promise to be fit.

Tropical Shakeology is Here!

There’s a new flavor of Shakeology and it’s called Tropical Shakeology. One unique thing about the new flavor is that it does not contain whey protein.  It has a proprietary vegan protein blend crafted from whole, plant-based proteins including sprouted brown rice, sacha inchi, chia, flax, quinoa, amaranth, and spirulina, and delivers all 9 essential amino acids. And it’s 100% dairy-free and lactose-free.

Tropical Shakeology

There’s been a push lately toward reducing or eliminating dairy in our diets. In the Insanity: Asylum diet guide Shaun T recommends no dairy products for the first two weeks of the program. If you were taking Shakeology before, that would not be possible, but it is now.

Since it contains no animal-based protein, Tropical Shakeology is certified as a vegan shake. It is also the first addition to the new Beachbody Ultimateline—products that help nurture the body’s natural ability to heal itself and enhance the body’s own organic processes.

And, like the Chocolate and Greenberry flavors, Shakeology Tropical Strawberry is packed with vitamins and minerals that continue to make Shakeology the Healthiest Meal of the Day®. With 160 calories, 20 grams of carbs, and 15 grams of protein, it’s a great breakfast choice that can help you achieve the body you’ve always wanted.

Since I know people like to try before they buy, I am offering free samples of Tropical Shakeology along with a Shakeology shaker cup. The only thing I need from you is to have you signed up as a free Team Beachbody member with me as your coach. There’s a good reason for this. If you like Shakeology and decide to order based on the sample that I send you, but you are already signed up with another coach, that coach will get the commission on the sale. Now as much as I would like to see everyone improving their health by drinking Shakeology, it is expensive for me to ship out free samples to people just to have someone else get the benefits. To get your free sample, simply email me with your contact information once you have your account set up. You can sign up for a free Team Beachbody account by clicking here. If you would like to change your coach to me, email me at phaack@beachbodycoach.com and I will give you instructions on how to do that.

There is also a bottom of the bag guarantee where you can return whatever amount of Shakeology you have left within 30 days for a refund of the purchase amount. To order a month’s supply of Shakeology Tropical Strawberry now, click the link below.

How to change your Beachbody Coach

There are a number of reasons why someone may want to change their Beachbody Coach. When people purchase a program from Beachbody.com they are assigned a coach who may or may not be in line with their fitness goals and program. Many of the people who have contacted me to change say that they have not received support from their assigned coach. Some coaches are just in it for the 25% discount on Beachbody programs and don’t have a desire to actually “coach” others to be successful. It is wise to not assume that your coach isn’t willing to help you on your fitness journey, so before changing coaches it is a nice courtesy to them to let them know you are planning to change. Here are the instructions on how to make me your Beachbody Coach. To change to another coach you would just need to know the coach ID.

Team Beachbody Coach

To change your assigned Beachbody Coach, you will just need to send an email to Coachrelations@teambeachbody.com. Here’s what the email would look like:

__________________________________________________

I would like to change my Team Beachbody Coach to Coach ID# 111635 – Peter Haack.

My user name is (your user / screen name) and my email account is: (your email address) and my name is (your name).

___________________________________________________

You can also call: 1-800-240-0913 and make the coach change over the phone.

Send the email from the email address you use to log into TeamBeachbody.com

There are a couple of restrictions if you are already a Beachbody Coach yourself or if you have currently have something ordered as an autoship home delivery, but start with the email to Coach Relations and that might be all it takes. Usually they get it switched within a day or two.

Introducing Energy and Endurance™ Pre-Workout Formula

The folks at Beachbody have finally put together a pre-workout drink to go along with their very popular post-workout recovery drink. Many people on the Beachbody programs have been taking supplements such as Jack3d. Some of the pre-workout supplements have warnings on them that they include ingredients that are banned by the NCAA and other organizations. Since Masters Track & Field is now subject to drug testing, that was not something I was going to take a chance on.

I just started taking E & E and have noticed a difference in my energy levels for my workouts. Expecially toward the end of the workout when I am usually dragging. The cost is about $30 for a monthly supply. I am not planning to take it before every workout so it should last me a couple of months. I will likely take it before the more intense cardio workouts and then along with my Track training as we get closer to summer.

Here’s a video and some information on Beachbody’s Energy and Endurance™ Pre-Workout Formula.

Shaun T Quote of the Day

“Look people. I’m just a tool to get you where you need to go. If you don’t want to go there, that’s on you. But I’m going to do my best to help you get where you want to be. Okay. So when you get mad and I hear you say ‘I love you but I hate you’. Let’s take the hate out. Love me and love yourself because you can dig, and you can go.”  -  Shaun T

From the Insanity: Fast and Furious workout DVD.

    Don’t skip your workout

I get this question a lot from almost every new person who signs up to have me as their Beachbody Coach: What is the best advice for someone trying to get really lean and fit? My answer is very simple, “Don’t skip your workout.”

Now there are a lot of other things that go into it like eating right and getting plenty of rest, but it all starts with committing to working out. It’s easy for me to say don’t skip your workout, but I know it’s not that easy. There are plenty of excuses for not being able to work out. I know there might be some exceptions out there, but for most of us working out is not that much fun. Even though we know it’s good for us, there are probably hundreds of other things you would rather do than work out. If you do it right, it can be downright uncomfortable. And it takes time.  Time that you could spend doing something else, or doing nothing. And sometimes doing nothing is more fun than working out.

So what’s the big deal if you skip a workout here and there. That one workout on it’s own is not going to make or break your fitness efforts. However, it does open up a door that if you skip today, you can skip tomorrow, and the next day.

You have to make the decision to do this for yourself. Nobody can do it for you. You can get help from online workout buddies on Teambeachbody or have a Beachbody Coach, but in the end the desire and effort cannot be granted to you. It has to come from inside you. You can do this. Don’t let yourself decide whether or not you want to do it each day. Make the decision now that you will stick with whatever program you are on. Then all you have to do is show up, do your best, and forget the rest.

Tony Horton Visits ESPN with P90X2

If you’ve listened to Mike & Mike in the Morning on ESPN Radio or Doug Gottlieb, you’ve no doubt heard them talking about P90X. The creator of P90X, Tony Horton, took a trip to ESPN to let the try out new workouts from P90X2. Here is a video of that workout.
